Ask The Expert- Steering - Does not return to center

So after driving about 800 miles to attempt to "break it in", I finally took the steering knuckle back off of the driver side. I found a gouged in the shaft of the ball joint and corresponding gouge in the street knuckle sleeve. I was able to buff them out and then reassembled the knuckle...

Ask The Expert- Steering - Does not return to center

I agree with your assessment that the movement such as that is a definite sign of wear, however, in my case I have already changed the drag link and tie rod to the metal cloak versions because mine were worn as well. Thanks for sharing that link!

Ask The Expert- Steering - Does not return to center

So I drove it. It seems better, but it still doesn't feel right. DynaTrac sales guy I reached out to said it would be a 500 mile break in period. /SMH

Definitely a possiblity. I was hoping the shop would have identified that and corrected it.

Ask The Expert- Steering - Does not return to center

The shop confirmed that the ball joints on the driver side were causing the issue. They are binding or very stiff. They said they reached out to Dynatrac who said sometimes it requires some break-in period. The shop also reached out to MC and they said that's unusual with that brand which is why...

Ask The Expert- Steering - Does not return to center

Hello! Hopefully I can get some direction here. Backstory - I recently installed the Metal Cloak (MC) 3.5" Game Changer lift. After the install I drove it around (local neighborhood) as I knew it would still need an alignment to be finished with the install, but I noticed some wandering and...

Finally got my Jeep "done". Alignment is done castor corrected and axles are centered. Drives nice! Though I think I have discovered some play in the steering box, that may need to be my next item.

Curious as to Where You Learn about Jeeps and Jeeping

I learned about Jeeps when my wife was stationed in Iceland for the US Navy. We were there for 4 years and I had bought a '84 CJ with a blown out rear on 38' Cepeks and a spring over lift from a buddy of mine for $1000. It still had the I-6. That is where I fell in love with the community...

    My JKU Build

I havent had it off road yet, so I cant speak to that yet, but all the parts feel quite substantial. The lift installed relatively easily. I havent had it on highways yet as I have been troubleshooting other issues not directly related to the lift (drag link, tierod, ball joints). I have an...

    Hello!

I was going to go cheap at first and just try to get done with this build without hemorrhaging more cash. But the more I researched the more I read to just get the Dynatrac Prosteer, so that's what I did. Being able to rebuild them and not have to remove them to do it was too enticing. Now I'm...

    Hello!

Time consuming mostly. It's not technically difficult. Hardest part is getting the old joints out! I just wish I would have planned to change them when I had the suspention taken appart for the lift install. I was hoping I would be able to get a few months out of them, but it is 9 years old, so...
