Dana 60 Upgrade

Hey guys,

So, I have a Dana 35 that blew up, and I've always said I was going to drive it until it goes, and then do a swap for a D44 or D60. The D44 is a super easy swap because it's roughly the same size and dimensions as the existing D35, so it just bolts in without any clearance issues or anything like that. I know, because I've helped a couple buddies with them.

The D60 is a little different story. Generally, it comes with the beefier 1350 yoke instead of the stock 1310 on the D35/D44 and the actual differential is completely different in a lot of cases (I'm looking at the G2 Assembly) and I am afraid it will interfere with the gas tank skid, but without having seen one and done it, maybe it just works.

So, my question is this, if you've done one were there any tricks or things you had to do to make things fit or did it just bolt right up? Secondly, on the NP231 end of things, what yoke should I be using? It currently has the standard 1310, should I just upgrade to a 1350 u-bolt style or should I use a Rubicon style flange? Looking for what's been done out there and what works and what doesn't.

Thanks,

Mark

A dana 60, even in stock location, will hit a stock gas tank, especially if there is a large cover on it.

What size tire is your goal? A semi float 60 for 37s or less just isn’t worth it vs what a 9 or a JK based 44 can handle for less money.

I'm on 33's at the moment, but was looking to get to somewhere in the 40" range over the next couple of years. My current lift wouldn't handle much larger than 35's, but it's all a process. You know what I mean? With an absolutely destroyed D35, it sort of just made sense to make that jump. At the very least, the JK44 is on the list.

I have been flip-flopping between the D60 and the TJ variant of the JK 44. The later is where I am leaning currently because I suspected the gas tank skid would be an issue.

Thanks for the reply!

Another quick question. When I look at the Currie RockJock 44s, I just can't figure out the difference the LB ends and the Set 10 ends. Is Set 10 Timkin, and LB some other brand or something like that? Just trying to make an educated decision and not regret it in the end.

Thanks again for the input guys.

I am not sure what the difference is in the ends.
Might drop a note to Currie to ask.

If you are looking at 40's in the future, might want to just look at the D60 or the 9 inch rear end. Ring and pinion on both are about the same size.

Set10 is a JK bearing setup. If you’re wanting a full float setup SET20 is the standard 60/14 bolt bearings.

Eh, yes and no. The 60 (9.75) has a lot more carrier to hold a lot bigger stuff in it. A 9 gives up carrier beef for the third pinion support and contact pattern with certain gear sets (like 4.88).
